U.K. (ChattahBox) - ‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’, a blog featuring the life of a prostitute named Belle de Jour, has been made notorious after sparking a book series, and a television series starring Billie Piper. But years of secrecy have been broken as Belle herself has come forward to expose herself. Dr. Brooke Magnanti, a child health researcher at the University of Bristol, has come forward and admitted that she is the writer behind the blog. Magnanti worked as a call girl between 2003 and 2004, as she worked to earn her PhD. “Anonymity had a purpose then - it will always have a reason to exist, for writers whose work is too damaging or too controversial to put their names on,” Magnanti told the BBC. “But for me, it became important to acknowledge that aspect of my life and my personality to the world at large. I am a woman. I lived in London. I was a call girl. The people, the places, the actions and feelings are as true now as they were then, and I stand behind every word with pride.” She decided to come forward over fear of being exposed by an ex-boyfriend, saying that she was tired of living the lie. She is currently writing a novel, and plans to continue writing her blog until she gets the happy ending she feels Belle deserves. |
